Who we help

Our donations will help the Children’s Health Fund’s COVID-19 Community Emergency Response
and Recovery Fund

Children are paying an extraordinary price as the pandemic continues to ravage this country. Kids are experiencing negative impacts on their education, housing stability, food security, and family economics, but perhaps most importantly, on their mental and physical health and wellbeing. These adverse childhood experiences and toxic stress have proven to have profound and potentially lifelong detrimental effects.

The COVID-19 Community Emergency Response and Recovery Fund was launched by Children’s Health Fund in March 2020 to ensure resiliency and supportive measures are available for children living in this country’s most marginalized communities during and after the pandemic.

Knowing that the communities of color served by our partners are disproportionately affected both in terms of infection and death rates and economic impacts, our programmatic focus is designed to meet their needs. Our interventions range from increasing access to testing for COVID-19, to direct support for families to mitigate impacts from lost wages. We support increased technology access for remote learning and mental health services to address trauma. These investments not only address healthcare access, but also elevate the focus on social determinants of health, the primary driver of health outcomes. As access to vaccines joins the list of priorities, we are working to help our National Network partners overcome challenges so they can offer vaccinations to their communities. By supporting our partner programs’ efforts in this way, we aim to narrow equity gaps for Black and brown communities during the pandemic and use the lessons learned to shape our programs and policy for the future.

How can recovery from the pandemic begin for children who have been impacted the most? When we envision what it will take for families to be protected from the virus, emerge from economic devastation, and begin healing, our attention must be on the equitable distribution of the vaccine to rural and communities of color, and the immense mental health needs of children.

  • COVID-19 Vaccine Equity
Black and Latinx people, like those served by our partners, have experienced the most infections and deaths from the virus, but are being vaccinated at disproportionately lower rates. Our partner programs are working to ensure access to the vaccine, but many are facing challenges like limited vaccine supplies and staff shortages. And while trials with youth ages 12-15 show promising results making it likely that vaccinations will be approved for children of all ages by the fall, help is needed to accelerate efforts in underserved communities to ensure the equitable distribution of the vaccine.
  • Mental Health
After a year of this crisis, the mental health needs of children are pressing. Our clinical partners are the first line of defense for children’s mental health, and they urgently need additional funding so they can help kids recover from the trauma caused by isolation, economic insecurity, and lost learning.
  • Telehealth Access
From this crisis, telehealth emerged as a powerful mechanism to help children and families overcome barriers to healthcare. Your support can ensure its sustainability.
  • Social Determinants of Health
Our partners need support to continue working with community leaders to identify and support solutions that address economic and social conditions that affect health, such as transportation barriers and food insecurity.
  • Advocacy
As the country continues to face unprecedented challenges and shifts towards recovery and beyond, your help will ensure we are persistent in fighting on behalf of the most vulnerable children across our communities through advocacy and policy change.
